Tanzania's Tanzania Revenue Authority has updated the duty valuation tables for imported used vehicles, affecting the cost of popular models entering through Dar es Salaam port.
The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has issued new current retail price (CRP) tables for used vehicle importation, effective 1 April 2026. These tables — which are used to calculate import duty when declared invoice values fall below market rates — have been updated to reflect current global used car pricing, with increases in the reference prices for several popular Japanese models.
Key Changes
The most significant increases in reference pricing apply to:
- Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series (2015–2021): Reference price up by 12%
- Toyota HiLux (2015–2020): Reference price up by 9%
- Toyota Prado 150 Series: Reference price up by 11%
- Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: Reference price up by 8%
Age Restrictions Remain at 10 Years
Tanzania continues to permit the importation of used vehicles up to 10 years old from the year of manufacture — a more permissive policy than Kenya's 8-year rule. This makes Tanzania an accessible destination for vehicles manufactured from 2016 onwards when importing in 2026.
Buyer Advice
The duty increase affects the total landed cost, but Tanzania remains one of the most active and accessible markets for Japanese used vehicles in East Africa. Buyers should request updated cost calculations incorporating the new TRA reference prices before finalising purchase decisions.
